Why don't people use the mute function?

People moan either that I am annoying, or ****ing them off, or I see people saying ''Why do you have to use racism'' ''Grow up'' etc to other people, or people will try and insult me.Yet no one ever seems to use the mute function, my Xbox Live experience is very good, someone gets lippy, I just mute em and it stops right there.Why don't people use the mute function?
I sincerely wish there was an option to precent stupid topics, but there isn't.As for the people on XBL who are crazy. Get over it.If you can't handle it, then don't play on Xbox Live. It's that simple. Why don't people use the mute function?

If you don't like it why leave Xbox Live when you can just stop it?Now thats a better option ain't it? And thats the point of this topic, if harassment bothers people so much online why not use features to stop it? I'm forever using the mute button on Live, screaming kids get muted first, then all the 'tough' talking people after that.
Why do people have to be annoying on Live? Sure I can mute it, but I shouldn't have to. Don't be obnoxious or I'll submit a poor review against you, problem solved (for me anyway)
Have any of you guys ever played social big team on halo 3??? Between the humming noises, 9 years olds screaming, and grown men cussing like sailors, YOU HAVE TO LEARN TO USE THE MUTE BUTTON IN ORDER TO KEEP FROM GOING INSANE!!! I mute 'em as soon as they get on my nerves without a second thought.
From what I've seen Halo 3's the only game that makes it easy as you can mute people from the score board. Every other game I've played requires you to go to the dash board menu and go to the most recently played with list which takes like a minute of searching through the the names. For your sake hopefully you can pick out the annoying players from the lobby before the game starts.

i do occasionally it just takes so long i wish it was easier in all games like halo

I use it all the time. I usually listen till I hear someone that annoys me then, mute, then I turn on my music.
